Servers love pens. We need them for our job. Pens are our ambassador to riches untold. Allow me to demonstrate through recent events.

I love my server fam. When they ask for a pen though, I get a little twitchy. Just ask a server sister about our interaction yesterday. I was a bit nervous. Why? Sometimes the pens are returned. Sometimes, they aren’t. Servers have been known to track down the fellow server who failed to return the pen. The liquid gold. The ambassador of riches untold.

Yesterday, a patron asked to borrow a pen. He saw the array of pens on my apron pocket. He also saw me reach down into my apron pocket and look at various pens before deciding on which one to give him. He must’ve been a server in the past or something. He smiled in complete understanding.

The pen I loaned him actually was a pen a patron left at a table two days ago during lunch rush. It was one of those fancy pens with a stylus on the top. I danced with excitement when I learned she left such a rare beauty. Don’t believe me? Ask my General Manager.

One more pen story. One night, I was returning seperate checks to a table. We attach them to small clipboards. One young lady saw her credit card and asked for it. I returned her card. Before I finished returning the other cards, she asked for a pen. My hands were full. I couldn’t give her a pen just yet and asked her to wait for a sec. Instead of waiting, she attempted to wrench the pen from my hand. Just in case you were curious, don’t attempt to take a pen from a server’s hand especially when they politely asked for you to wait a sec. And besides, it was my order taking pen. My “lucky” pen. No one messes with the “lucky” pen!
