Almost Didn’t Make It!
In less than two weeks, the restaurant where I serve will be a year old. Did you know I almost didn’t become a server at where I work now. After stalking their homepage for months, bombarding the ever patient hostess with phone calls, and having 3 job interviews, I still was very close to not being a server there. Why? Well, here’s why.
I was on vacation. Had a great time too hiking and camping. Unfortunately, I forgot to check my email. The training schedule got bumped up a few days which also happened to be the last few days of my vacation. It wasn’t until I was checking my voicemail at the end of my vacation that I knew something was amiss.
I seriously freaked out. I called every manager it seemed. Thankfully, the General Manager, gave me the green light to stay despite missing 2 days of training. She emailed me the info I needed to succeed.
With very little rest from the vacation, I rolled up to the restaurant the next day. Almost didn’t get in for training again because the manager at the front door didn’t know I was coming.
Studied the menu info which was a good thing. Next thing I knew, the training started with a quiz on the info I just crammed! Passed the first hurdle.
The learning curve was great. There was much information and I needed to switch from a diner type of environment to a high volume setting. Two different deals altogether. But it was worth it. Of course I made mistakes along the way. Thankfully, I learned from them.
Let’s see what this next year brings!
