Photos and the Server
Now back in my day…don’t you love it when a sentence starts that way… When I was a child, there were no cell phones. Technology didn’t play a huge part in my childhood. But now? Now cell phones can be a dominant fixture in a restaurant experience. That’s just the way it is.
People take pictures of their meals. They take pictures with their friends and their meals. They pose by the more scenic places of the establishment. They take selfies with their drinks. They pose with friends holding their drinks.
Behind every photo there is a server capturing the memory.
In most cases, I don’t mind. It’s part of our job now. That’s just the way it is. I have jokingly said that servers should charge a 50 cent photo fee. Maybe that could happen. (Just kidding. Or am I? *evil laugh*)
There was only one time when I really really didn’t want to take a photo. This happened at the end of a very long shift. I finished all of my server chores and had one more table to sweep. I could feel that fresh air.
A beautiful young couple came to me. The guy spoke. “I know you are doing your sidework but could you please take a picture of us?” I agreed. But then the couple started moving to a totally different section of the restaurant. Huh?
I took a couple of pictures. The lady didn’t like the pics. I did it again. She still didn’t like them! What else could I do? I simply handed to phone back to the couple, wished them a good night, and returned to completing my chores.
I think I saw them take a selfie.
