The Walls Have Eyes
Let me give you one server secret. It’s our job to observe.
I was in the kitchen putting away dirty dishes one night. One of my server sisters came to me and exclaimed, “Someone just put an entire ceramic bean bowl in their to go box!” I gave a look of surprise and hurried over to the table. I gently confronted the patron by offering a styrofoam bowl to take home.
On Mother’s Day, a mom and two sons were at the same table. Mom ordered a fountain drink and then proceeded to share the drink with her teenage son. How do I know they were sharing? As I approached the table, I heard the mother warn her son to stop drinking from her cup.
We observe a lot. We hear a lot. Many times though, we opt to remain silent about some issues. It’s not worth the bad juju that’ll definitely happen. For example, what would I have said to the mom on Mother’s Day? “I’m going to charge you for two fountain drinks because of your thirsty son?” I let the issue go. And yes, I informed management.
Just know we see quite a bit. Are you paranoid yet?
