Server Safety

I was heading to work one cold day in autumn several years ago. While pulling into a parking spot, I saw a young man in jeans and a white hoodie walking around. I made eye contact with him and he quickly looked away. Didn’t think twice about it. I pulled into my parking spot and quickly walked inside. (It was cold.)

I was opening the restaurant and a coworker looked visibly shaken. She was literally shaking and crying. She told me that she was just mugged at gunpoint. “It was a young man in jeans and a white hoodie. He ran down the street.”

A young man in jeans and a white hoodie mugged my friend at gunpoint? What a sec…Didn’t I just…see that same guy in the parking lot? Didn’t I just look him in the eye just 15 minutes ago?

My friend somehow kept her composure and contacted the right folks. She stopped working there several months later.

Servers, especially women, are vulnerable. Have to keep a sharp eye out. Many of us will refuse to walk by ourselves at night.

So being a server isn’t a walk in the park even when you aren’t on the clock.

Guardian angels were looking over me mom. Your prayers work.
