Don’t Suck
“And….don’t suck.”
Servers usually gather together with a manager before the shift begins. At the meeting, the manager will share any pertinent annoucements. For example, if we have a new beer or food special, we’ll review that.
Thing is, we servers are quite an interesting group of people. So sometimes, the announcements may sound…weird. One time at a previous restaurant gig, the manager said, “We have a new general manager joining our team. Please don’t scare him off.” At the same restaurant the same manager said this at the beginning of the meeting, “Oh yeh, and we’re out of french fries.” Yet another time, the same manager asked, “Okay, why is Imani giving her two week’s notice?” (That’s another story to share later.)
My favorite ending to meetings has to be these words by my first General Manager. “Check your stations. Make sure your sections are clean. And…don’t suck.”
These words became so expected that if he didn’t say that phrase, the servers thought something may go wrong. We’d sometimes bring our hands in and yell “Don’t Suck!!” at the top of our lungs.
Even today like 5 years later. I find myself mumbling those words at the end of our little meetings.
“Don’t suck.”
