Friendship Bracelets

One night, a family of four came to eat dinner. The mom brought a small friendship bracelet kit with her. She then explained that her preteen daughter was having trouble making the bracelets. Guess she wanted to demonstrate how easy it was to make it but she was having trouble too.

When I was a preteen, I was very socially awkward and stood out like a sore thumb. And being socially awkward in preteen years was like putting a bullseye right on your heart and asking your peers to relentlessly attack it. And that’s what happened. For 3 years. Dark times.

I had several anchors to help me cope. One was playing the violin. The other was my faith. The third anchor was me making friendship bracelets. So when I saw the preteen and I saw the mom working on the bracelet, I just had to help.

So I grabbed the threads during dinner rush and taught them. Mom and dad got the steps down. And once I encouraged the preteen to try again, I then left the table.

Who knows? Maybe this too may help her through her preteen angst.
