Behind!
The restaurant where I work has a small server alley (and a kitchen in the front of the house too). For our guests, the quickest way to the restrooms is through the server’s alley. While my server family and I were scurrying to and fro during lunch rush, we heard the word, “Behind!” We all automatically took a step forward with a look of surprise. I didn’t recognize the voice and looked behind me. I saw the back of a man in a blue suit briskly walking by.
I looked at my server friend and we looked at each other quizzically. Here was the conversation between us.
Her- Who said that?
Me- I don’t know. It wasn’t anyone who worked here.
Her- He had to have been a server. He knows the lingo too well.
Me- Yep. That’s true.
One thing about servers is that we have a…short hand language. The word “behind” means several things such as, “Move out of the way,” “Don’t take a step back,” “Don’t move for a sec”. It’s a unique language that only servers, former servers, and cooks know.
Cool to discover former servers. Never know when they are around until they speak the language.
